This map provides an overview of OceanGliders observatories and glider activities across different regions. Each box (approximately 1000 km × 1000 km) highlights areas where glider deployments have taken place, either as individual missions or as part of sustained observing efforts.

These observatories represent key locations where gliders are regularly operated to support long-term ocean monitoring and time-series data collection, contributing significantly to oceanographic research and observing systems.

International Coordination

OCEAN GLIDERS

OceanGliders is a GOOS program dedicated to coordinating and advancing sustained ocean observations using underwater gliders. As part of the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS), OceanGliders focuses on collecting and integrating high-quality glider data to improve our understanding of ocean dynamics, biogeochemistry, and climate variability.

OCEANOPS

OceanOPS is a global coordination center that monitors and supports the implementation, operation, and data flow of ocean observing networks, including OceanGliders, Argo, OceanSITES, and other GOOS components. It provides real-time tracking, data management, and reporting services to ensure the efficiency, sustainability, and visibility of global ocean observation efforts.

GOOS

The Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) provides leadership and coordination for a global system of sustained ocean observations, based on a set of Essential Ocean Variables. It is the foundation for data-driven solutions for weather and extreme event forecasting, climate adaptation, coastal and maritime risk responses, biodiversity stewardship, and sustainable ocean economies.

EUROGOOS

EuroGOOS is the European component of the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) of UNESCO. It supports five regional systems to strengthen and coordinate ocean observations. By identifying priorities, fostering collaboration, and promoting the value of operational oceanography, EuroGOOS drives the sustained measurements needed to deliver fit-for-purpose marine services.
