About EGC

The European Glider Community

The European Glider Community (EGC) originally known as EGO Network (Everyone’s Gliding Observatories) is a global community of oceanographers and engineers dedicated to advancing the use of autonomous underwater gliders for ocean observation. Since its inception in 2005, this community has played a pivotal role in fostering international collaboration, innovation, and knowledge sharing within the glider community.

While it was founded as European Gliding Observatories, EGO quickly expanded beyond Europe, welcoming members from all over the world, including both academic and industry partners.  Our mission is to facilitate glider-based ocean monitoring, support technological advancements, and provide a platform for collaboration among researchers, operators, and developers in order to enable European glider community knowledge exchange.

A Collective Effort for Global Ocean Observations

The EGC actively supports the real-time and delayed-mode dissemination of glider data to global databases such as the Coriolis Data Center, ensuring broad accessibility for scientific research and environmental monitoring. Through collaborative efforts, we aim to maximize the impact of glider-based ocean observations, contributing to a deeper understanding of marine ecosystems, climate variability, and ocean dynamics.

Join us in shaping the future of autonomous ocean exploration.

Advancing Glider Technology & Community Growth

Gliders are smart, autonomous vehicles that react to their environment, offering a revolutionary approach to sustained, cost-effective, and high-resolution ocean observations. As their technology evolves, gliders are becoming increasingly intelligent, aligning with futuristic concepts of autonomous ocean robots.

Commitment to the Glider Community

At EGC, we believe that collaboration, innovation, and knowledge sharing are key to advancing autonomous ocean observation. By fostering a global network of glider users, we aim to enhance operational efficiency, improve data accessibility, and drive technological advancements in underwater glider research. Through strategic initiatives, training programs, and open-source development, EGC actively supports the growth and success of the glider community worldwide.
